What is THX Surround EX?

Using the 6.1 matrix format with ONE surround back speaker the problem appears that sound will actually be perceived by the listener from the front instead of from the rear when sitting very centered to the surround back speaker. Also when turning the head a little bit aside to the right or to the left will deteriorate the perception of the surround back information to that side. THX engineers think that these problems should be avoided and the solution is to distribute the mono surround back signal to TWO surround back speakers. This will create a more diffuse surround back sound image and wrong perception of the surround back sound will be prevented. This application is called THX Surround EX under licence of Lucasfilm. What is Pro Logic II?

This is the newest version of the analog Dolby surround decoder, the previous system was simply called Dolby Pro Logic. Pro Logic II is significantly improved in terms of channel separation, dynamic replay and channel information steering. Also the surround channels are not limited in the frequency response and they are not in mono anymore, which means you will hear different signals in surround left and surround right, basically you can call this stereo. Additionally Pro Logic II contains a bass management, and so it provides a 5.1 output channel structure just as Dolby Digital. A very big advantage is that even stereo recorded tracks can be played in surround with a very good 3-dimensional sound stage. Therefore it provides a music and a movie mode.
